AQUEDUCT - 4/4/14

Race 1-

1. PRIVATIZE

2. DEXTER CHEESESTAKE

3. THE IRON FURNACE

#5 PRIVATIZE has squandered numerous opportunities to clear the maiden ranks, but faces a soft field today after making a middle move and being collared late in his last start.  He has the speed to take control of this race from the outset, but can also stalk the pace that #6 DEXTER CHEESESTAKE figures to set in here.  The slight class drop will do him some good as well.  #4 THE IRON FURNACE goes 2nd off a claim after showing little against 25k sellers in his last start.  Trainer Linda Rice is just 1 for her last 10 bringing maidens back in a week or less, but the field this son of Friendly Island faced last week was stronger than the one he meets today.  The aforementioned Dexter Cheesestake showed speed on debut before fading late and now stretches out in distance.  He has upside as a lightly raced gelding and will be a decent price in this compact field.

Race 2-

1. GO WEST MARIE

2. VIOLET HOUR

3. TIZAROCKET

#5 GO WEST MARIE is going to get a strong pace to run at late, and the N1X event she exits was far tougher than this affair.  The rail on St. Patrick’s Day was still somewhat strong, and this filly was never anywhere near it.  Should the pace heat up, she’ll be a serious late player.  #2 VIOLET HOUR is the main speed for trainer Todd Pletcher as she exits a narrow miss at this level.  The rail draw is no bargain, but she dealt with it successfully in her last and should be able to procure the early edge facing mostly 3YO fillies in this spot.  #1 TIZAROCKET was entered against weaker on Thursday, but trainer Rudy Rodriguez scratched her and won with the other half of his entry.  This filly is drawn outside of the main speedster, which should give her an advantage, as she prefers to stalk the pace.

Race 3-

1. SALUTOS AMIGOS

2. MI HIJO

3. MONSTER MASH

#5 SALUTOS AMIGOS makes his first start for trainer David Jacobson after earning a graded stakes placing for Eric Guillot.  Jacobson is 31% with new arrivals to his barn returning in 45-75 days, good for a $2.62 ROI.  The competition he’s meeting today is undoubtedly quite a bit softer than what he has faced recently.  #3 MI HIJO goes first off a claim by Randi Persaud and returns on short rest.  Over the last five years, Persaud is 17% with runners going first off of claims returning in 1-7 days ($5.61 ROI).  The win this son of Harlan’s Holiday scored on Monday was impressive, and he should get a similar setup in this spot.  #2 MONSTER MASH rode a gold rail to a handy victory last time out and now moves up in class.  He has had limited opportunities on conventional dirt and has upside for that reason.

Race 4-

1. READTHESMOKESIGNAL

2. ECONOMIC FORECAST

3. LITTLE WYATT

#5 READTHESMOKESIGNAL goes 2nd off a layoff for a barn that’s off to a red-hot start at this meet.  This son of Read the Footnotes returned against a solid field that has yielded strong subsequent performances from the eventual 1-2 finishers.  He has the speed to clear the field with ease and will be very dangerous with a comfortable early advantage.  #2 ECONOMIC FORECAST rallied to snag the place dough in his last start, as the winner drove well clear in the closing stages.  This trainer is off to a strong start at the meet, and this 5YO is not long removed from performances that make him competitive in here.  #3 LITTLE WYATT made the pace last time out and was able to hang in there late because of the soft early splits.  This son of Rockport Harbor has run well on this surface, and trainer Eddie Kenneally has done well with claimers on dirt returning in 45+ days.

Race 5-

1. JOAN’S CHOICE

2. TECH FALL

3. ROMANCING THE GOLD

#6 JOAN’S CHOICE made the pace in his last start before giving way late, and he spent the majority of that race on a dead rail.  He goes 3rd off a short layoff today and is once again the controlling speed in a short field.  The fact that he’s going first off a claim by David Jacobson only adds to his appeal.  #2 TECH FALL returns off a long layoff for a new barn, as this one-time stakes caliber son of Birdstone looks to resurrect his career.  New trainer Rudy Rodriguez is 32% with new arrivals to his barn off of 180+ day breaks, good for a $2.02 ROI.  Many of this gelding’s prior races would make him a handy winner in here.  #1 ROMANCING THE GOLD spent the majority of his last start on a dead rail and now goes first off a claim by Bruce Brown.  He was taken for 25k and now races for 35k, which is a sign of confidence from this competent trainer.

Race 6-

1. TEXAS TWO STEP

2. EYE LUV LULU

3. RAGTIME

#5 TEXAS TWO STEP was an impressive debut winner for Kellyn Gorder at Oaklawn, and now makes his first start for Chad Brown.  He is drawn favorably on the far outside this afternoon and should get a decent pace to chase in the opening stages.  His incredible potential moving forward is far too significant to overlook.  #1 EYE LUV LULU gets a major rider change after finishing a good 2nd in his last start.  He lost all chance at the start of that outing and rallied nicely, and now goes 2nd off a layoff.  The rail draw is no bargain, but there’s speed outside of him that will set the table.  #2 RAGTIME faces winners for the first time after wiring a soft MSW field in his last start at Gulfstream.  This son of Henny Hughes is a rare Shug McGaughey trainee with good early speed, and he figures to be in the mix from the outset this afternoon.

Race 7-

1. FAME AND FORTUNE

2. KATE GREENAWAY

3. MEI LING

#5 FAME AND FORTUNE ran a very strong race on debut to check in 2nd after breaking poorly then getting steadied on the far turn.  She now returns off a long layoff for trainer Chad Brown, and the winner of the race she exits is now a stakes winner.  This filly is a full sister of 2013 Whitney winner Cross Traffic and should be set for an improved run off the bench.  #1 KATE GREENAWAY is by Tiznow, whose progeny win at a rate of 7% on debut.  This filly is a full sister of Grace Hall, who took the 2011 Spinaway.  The rail draw is no bargain, but this barn has been very good with first timers over the last five years.  #10 MEI LING cuts back in distance after enduring a tough trip last time out at Gulfstream.  The 3rd place finisher from her last came right back to win, and this filly  looks like she’s going to be at her best sprinting.

Race 8-

1. PARC MONCEAU

2. RUBINDY

3. DOWAGER

#1 PARC MONCEAU returns from a Floridian winter where she finished in the money 3 times at Gulfstream.  She has landed in a race that will set up beautifully for this gal, who does her best running late.  With a patient ride from Jose Ortiz, she’ll be in range to stalk the pace and pounce in crunch time.  #3 RUBINDY faces winners for the first time after breaking her maiden impressively in a race taken off the turf in late December.  Trainer Chad Brown is 40% with allowance starters on dirt coming off of maiden wins, good for a $2.10 ROI.  This is hardly the toughest N1X you’ll find in these parts.  #5 DOWAGER crushed a maiden field last time out and now moves up in class.  She has shown potential in two recent starts after being asked for more speed early, and she’s drawn favorably for a stalk and pounce trip today.

Race 9-

1. MY LUCKY LIEU

2. MOMMY’S DEAREST

3. FRONT COVER DREAM

#7 MY LUCKY LIEU rallied well to snag the place dough after charging up a dead rail in her last start.  She will get some pace to run at this afternoon and has run three improved races of late for two different barns.  With a similar effort, she’ll take top honors today.  #3 MOMMY’S DEAREST is one of the main speeds in this septet and she was wide the entire way last time out.  With a weight break today, she can sneak away early, and that’d make her very dangerous.  #4 FRONT COVER DREAM stretches out on short rest for Randi Persaud after settling for 3rd in her last start.  She should appreciate the return to a dry strip and will offer value today.
